Colleen's Notebook

July 19, 2009 - What beautiful weather we have been having lately!  Riding has been great.  I recently went trail riding with some friends at Jacobsburg State Park and we had a great time.  I took one of my students, Joe, along and it was his very first trail ride.  He had a great time!  I believe my students need to gain confidence outside of the arena so they learn how to deal with different situations as they arise.  I find taking them out on a trail ride away from home a great way to introduce them to this.  We went to lunch at local diner afterward and had lots of laughs and great times!

I took Harvey to the BCHP for some cross-country schooling and LOVED it.  He's gonna a cute little event pony.  He really has taken a liking to jumping.  He didn't blink an eye at anything.

Sissy is still out on trial and very well.  The woman trying her really likes and I am hopeful this will be a good match and she will give her a loving home.  She is a very nice woman and Sissy is such a sweetie....She's a total love.

Russell finally got shoes on his front feet, and wow, did he need them!  His feet are doing much better.  He didn't have enough hoof to put shoes on the backs yet.  Maybe next time.  Someone is coming back out to see him on July 20th.

06/05/09 - Rain, rain, go away!  Riding has been difficult this week.  Winston is doing great!  And so is Harvey...took to the BCHP on May 26th and we got two really high scores for Intro A and B!  Candy has been improving lately, too.

05/17/09 - Just got back from a fun day at the Lehigh Valley Owner Handler Associations Dog Show!  We have launched our "Puppies Helping Ponies" campaign and want to thank everyone at the show who purchased "Woof 'Ems" to help support the horses!

05/15/09 - I thought it might be a good idea to add a page with miscellaneous notes about goings on at the farm and in life in general, just for fun.  So, here is my first "page" of the notebook!

In 2008, our first "official" year of our rescue, we took in three horses and five ponies.  The horses were all owner-surrenders, one of which was an was an extremely exigent situation (Tanner - fractured leg) in which the horse was in imminent danger of euthanisia.  Three of the five ponies were slaughter rescues.  We adopted out two horses and three ponies last year.

So far, in 2009, we have taken in two horses and one pony, all of which were owner-surrenders.  The pony will be staying with us and assisting us with horsemanship classes (Harvey).  We have adopted out two horses so far this year.

We currently have one pony (Candy) and one horse (Tanner) that are in long-term care with us.  We expect to have Tanner available for adoption some time late summer.  Candy has special handling issues and we do not know when she will be available...it won't be for some time.  Right now, I am the only person that Candy will allow near her.

We have assisted a number of people with placing their horses through our courtesy listings page.  We have helped to place five horses and we currently have a really cute mare on that page right now!

I took one of the horses (Sissy) to a show on May 3rd and she was high-point English horse for the day!  We had made a connection at the show and she was placed one week later, so that was certainly a success!

Tanner had his surgery in January and has healed beautifully.  The leg will always look a little ugly, but he is doing great!

We are excited that we will be participating in the Kempton Fair coming up in June!  We are also now offering Introduction to Horses classes for families thinking of getting involved with horses!

On personal note...a Winston update, my horse...I got on him for the first time last week!  I am starting him undersaddle now...we are just walking and learning what the reins mean and what my leg means and all that!  So far, so good.  He gets loads of ground work and he's doing great.  I'm very happy to have finally found a horse for myself after a year and a half of searching.

I took Harvey to his very first horse show ever on May 12 and he was such a good boy!  We did Intro A and B and he was awesome...certainly not perfection, but his behavior was perfection!  I was so thrilled with him.  He is really coming along and enjoying himself.  We are very happy to have him here!

HARVEY TOOK SECOND PLACE IN INTRO B WITH A SCORE OF 60.5%!  Not bad for his first show!
